Wolf Garden

With a psychological method added to its dreamy flashbacks and sleight-of-hand twists, Wolf Garden is the type of film that promises monsters but leaves the full explanation up to the viewer’s imagination. Left to fill in the blanks the story still manages to lure you in with the idea that a formidable foe is somewhere beyond the four walls of an isolated cottage. Within the dreams, the two leading characters have, Wolf Garden wants you to know something bad is about to happen. Better yet, something bad might have already happened and what we are seeing now is simply the foreshadowing of an event that ended in blood and screams. But who was the victim?

William and his girlfriend spend many hours together in the darkened British countryside. There is a dark secret carried between the two. The ghost of a man far older than William appears and together they discuss the dangers of their current situation as well as the danger lurking outside. For William, the monster is not unknown to him. He feeds it. A shed out the back serves as a habitat and jail for this mysterious creature that is not shown very much but is slowly brought in for the film.

William, portrayed by Wayne David, who also serves as the writer-director of Wolf Garden, delivers a mesmerizing performance in this thriller and horror production. Before this role, David showcased his talent in several short films and has even taken on a leading part in the film “Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda.” His portrayal perfectly captures the moody essence of the film. However, it is worth mentioning that sometimes, when multiple roles are handled by a single person in the production process, the intended message of the movie can become diluted.

The timeline is skewed which doesn’t help an already confusing set of details. I can assume that the point of doing that was to keep the big reveal at bay. Wolf Garden gets better in the viewer’s reflection of it. There’s a lovely sentiment about love that drifts between the feeling that one of them is the cause behind all of the events that are flickered onto the screen.

The press release for Wolf Garden touts a storyline much like American Werewolf in London. However, this is not anything like that, nor is it like most of the popular werewolf films at all. Instead, the script is flipped. This is not the transformation of someone suddenly discovering that they are a wolf. It’s the speculation of stereotypes that serves this film some favor. With minimal cast, the fact that there is a mystery to solve at all is satisfyingly great. In its essence, it reminded me a little of Bloodthirsty, an underrated and underappreciated indie werewolf movie too.
