Renfield movie

Renfield is the type of film that takes a story we already know and love and turns it into something relatable, edgy, and bloody. On the one hand, there is the ever-present bully Dracula. Long ago he seduced a young man called Renfield into a lifestyle as his servant. We are introduced to their dynamic in the middle of an exorcism that goes completely awry.

Once again Renfield is gaslit into believing Dracula will change his victimizing ways. This is the other side of this symbolic and transitional aspect that the film hides with plenty of double talk and loads of comedy. Renfield looks into the eyes of his Master and believes that this time he has really, really really changed.

They say Nicolas Cage is a national treasure and in playing the part of a metaphorical narcissist by way of Dracula, audiences are again reminded of that fact. Some of the actor’s more recent films have divided fans. Movies like The Old Way, Butcher’s Crossing, and Willy’s Wonderland have not faired that well. However, it usually isn’t Cage’s fault. His second fiddle role in the movie Renfield is just another example of why the man has staying power and why we love him so much. As Dracula, Cage is phenomenal and despite having less screen time than his co-star Nicolas Hoult, he lights up the screen once more.

Like the town’s man whore, Dracula plows through all the bodies of anyone Renfield can find. So after a lengthy hoe-phase bloodbath, a change of scenery is on the cards. The two need to move to a different town and restart the cycle all over again. By now Renfiled is beginning to want more from life. Renfeild might be sort of undead but he’s beginning to see things differently. Especially now that he’s joined a self-help group to help him have the life he deserves. And like trying to break free of any trauma-bonded relationship. That shit is hard.

It’s no surprise that writers Ryan Ridley (The Inbetweeners) and Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) were able to come up with such a clever and witty script given the amount of talent that oozes out of both. There’s so much subtext layered in with Vampire lore that the additional gore-filled action sequences are just the cherry on top. Choreography is especially thrilling when Hoults Renfield is front and center. It’s quick, nasty, and full of grit, just as we like it.

Directed by Chris McKay, Renfield pushes all the right buttons the entire way through. The casting is purposefully well-placed and includes a Lobo Crime boss played by Shohreh Aghdashloo. The title is a must-see if you’re looking for your next fix of monster movie excellence.
