Time Addicts Because The Perfect Anxiety-Fuelled Heist Does Exist

With a release date of December 7th, the Australian film “Time Addicts” 2023 not only gives you a bird’s eye view of Melbourne but also as much colorful lingo as you can stomach. With an Australian accent pushed to its absolute smack-talking Eshay fuelled best, the time-loop-friendly film follows two best friends. They both owe their meth dealer Kane a truckload of money.

With no way to pay off their growing drug tab, Denise and Johnny take up his offer. This hour-bending title’s narrative explores the consequences of becoming consumed by the concept of time. These characters fight their way through the past and present trying to find their way home.

The film introduces us to Denise (Freya Tingley), as she and “just friends” Johnny (Charles Grounds), loiter in a car park. Short of payment and under threat of losing their thumbs, Kane offers them a way to score their next hit and clear the money they owe.

His entrepreneurial office is located firmly in the movie world’s idea of where drug deals and low-brow negotiations should be, a laundromat. The three discuss options as washing machine chugs in the background. All they need to do is retrieve a duffle bag in a flop house. Not seeing an alternative, they agree.

Once Johnny and Denise arrive, they climb through the window. This is the only way into the dilapidated, boarded-up shack. It’s only the audience that becomes suspicious of the fact that “one way in and one way out” is always a red flag for cinematic experiences. Not only that but the fact that Denise and Johnny aren’t concerned that Kane, it seems, has sent two addicts to steal a duffle bag full of their favorite pastime doesn’t go unnoticed.

Time Addicts moves slowly as it establishes the integral characters and their motivations. Who they are and what they want from each other forming its version of tension as the circumstances of their situation evolve.

Johnny decides if they are going to put their freedom at risk they might as well sample the goods they have been sent to collect. Johnny takes a toke and quickly disappears into a cloud of smoke. Effectively kicking the Time Addicts storyline into a higher gear, the ripple effect that alters the course of their lives commences intertwining multiple timelines.

Johnny and Denise find the blurring of boundaries between past, present, and future hurtling towards them.

Visual effects are well executed with Johnny and Denise meeting their future and past selves. The house they are in spreads its lineage out into smaller chunks that divulge several shocking twists and turns alongside answers to why Kane chose them in the first place.

Writer and director Sam Odlum took inspiration from Phillip K. Dick’s timeless science fiction classics and the vibrant world of modern Korean cinema. Compared with titles like Blade Runner and Total Recall, it’s easy to see the attention to detail in TIME ADDICTS, which embraces a unique fusion of genres.

Tonally, Time Addicts 2023 meshes compelling unpredictability with the situations Denise and Johnny find themselves in, The title is fueled by the intoxicating effects of drugs, that effortlessly oscillate between emotionally charged high-stakes scenarios and absurdity.

Overall, Time Addicts has a lovely genuine aesthetic despite the performances often feeling hammy. This added a layer of dark humor that suited the seedy nature of the drug underbelly where Time Addicts plants itself.
