Boar 2017 Poster

Everyone thought the “Boar” movie from Chris Sun was going to be a remake of the cult movie hit Razorback from 1984. Starring a giant outback wild pig that eats people it’s easy to see why. Was this different? This review features photographs I took myself as a VIP audience member at the red carpet premiere in Nambour, Queensland. The event included a before and after party, a signed poster, champagne, and most importantly the opportunity to mingle with the cast and crew.

Boar Movie Review, Not a Razorback Film Remake

I never see movies with the masses, I always go at odd times to beat the crowds. This premiere screening of the Boar movie sold out so I got a dose of audience participation. The reactions on this occasion added to the fantastic atmosphere. With the humor infusion of both banter and purposeful Aussie jokes infused effortlessly into a horror film, this title had not only myself but the entire theater cracking up laughing.

This film is an escape from reality that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Despite a few minor technical flaws, it manages to maintain being captivating. Admittedly, there were a couple of moments that slightly bothered me, such as characters miraculously recovering from serious injuries without any consequences. I won’t reveal any spoilers, but one would expect such injuries to leave a lasting impact.

Who Plays Bernie in the Boar Movie?

The acting in the “Boar” movie was above par. One standout performance was delivered by the incredibly talented Nathan Jones, who portrayed the character Bernie with sheer brilliance. So impressed was I by his skills that I even managed to seize the perfect moment for a selfie with him during the unforgettable after-party.

A mesmerizing tale in its own right is immersive with a well-executed narrative and additional scenes featuring just the right amount of individuals to feel the terrifying weight of the colossal creature that is Boar. Without a doubt, I could happily relish in the sight of Nathan Jones (as Bernie) belting out tunes in the brilliant car-karaoke scene for eternity. Truth be told, it ranks as one of the most uproarious moments for the title. Moreover, I must confess my penchant for jump scares, and the Killer Pig feature film delivered a handful of spine-tinglingly exhilarating ones that truly left an indelible mark.

Between Simone Buchanan’s excellence as a mother in anguish to Ken (John Jarratt’s) and Blue (Roger Ward) wandering pissed in the outback, I had a great time with it and took a shine to most of the Boar cast.

Griffin Walsh’s Bart was my absolute favorite though. I learned during the Q&A after the film, he’s from Nambour and this is his debut acting role.

If you want a simple story, filled with some fabulous talent, many of which Australia hasn’t seen for a while, then Boar is going to tick all your boxes.

Where is the Movie Boar Filmed?

Chris Sun’s 2018 movie was made in Kandanga. The Mary Valley is a picturesque backdrop housing a violent and bloodthirsty creature. Kandanga is a small remote town very close to Gympie in Australia’s sunshine state of Queensland.

The Red Carpet & The Boar (Razorback)

Before the premiere, I obtained a media pass by contacting the right people at the right time. I was beyond excited and rehearsed my questions on the hour’s drive to Nambour. I found myself nestled beside the news crew, photographers, and other media clicking photos and soaking in the atmosphere.

As the sun went down many of the extras, crew, friends, ticket holders, and family wandered up the red carpet enjoying the limelight. By the time the main film’s stars began to arrive, the crowd and media were a hive of activity. Everyone was waiting for the main event which was John Jarratt arriving in a truck. A competition was held with residents for the best 4×4 and the chosen car would carry him to the venue.

Short Interviews With 3 Cast Members at the Boar Movie Premiere

Did you know a guy drives the Boar? I didn’t. His name is Bud Beckett and I asked him a few questions.

(Me) What’s it like inside the Boar?

(BB) It’s pitch black in there and they let you out now and again for a breather. You have to imagine what it looks like on the outside. Everything’s totally on headphone commands from Chris.

(Me) What do you do during the filming break during the day?

(BB) I just rest and get ready for the next one.

(Me) What was the last movie you watched?

(BB) Raven.

Griffin Walsh

Griffin grew up in Nambour and this is his first acting gig.

(Me) Who in the cast is most like their character?

(G) Definitely, Simone, she is such a lovely person. She was a mum figure for me especially since I was 16 when we were filming and I went for two weeks without seeing my own mother. Simone filled that role and she’s amazing. And in the film, she plays an amazing mother. Her character is powerful and supports her children.

(M) What was the last movie that you watched?

(G) The Latest Avengers.

Damien Duffy

a.k.a The Wildman

(Me) Who in the cast is most like their character?

(DD) I’m gonna go right ahead and say to myself because I played myself. But Ernie Dingo definitely was himself. he was in character as himself. He’s a very cheeky individual and that’s the sort of character he played in the movie—no bullshit—and a bit cheeky.

John Jarratt was a little bit rawer in person than he was in the fantastic film. He is a legend.

But I think about it, Nathan Jones. I think if he was in that situation, he wouldn’t react any differently. he would just get in and start messing shit up (excuse my French)

Simone Buchanan

(Me) Who in the cast is most like their character?

(S) Me. I would have to say to myself.

(Me) What do you do on break during the filming?

(S) Kids.

(Me) What was the last movie you watched?

(S) I can’t remember, it’s been a while.

Is Boar a Remake of RazorBack?

In the lead-up to watching the movie Boar, I became very aware that many thought this would be a reboot or a remake of Razorback (1984). While Razorback is somewhat of a cult favorite, this is not anything like that. Both films do have pigs in them though!

What’s the Difference Between a Swine and a Boar?

Both a boar and a pig or hog are all the same. However, there are a few things that allow you to tell them apart. Boars are the males of the species. Boars have balls (literally) and this one in 2019’s Boar is one of a kind.

In the outback, no one can hear you scream. Well; they can and in this film, this beast is a giant. Roaming the Australian outback, there is a killer on the loose.
