It would be fair to say, I am not Zack Snyder’s biggest fan. For Mother of Movies, he’s a bit hit-and-miss. I loved ‘300’, ‘Watchmen’ and of course, ‘Dawn of the Dead.’ I wasn’t that keen on ‘Sucker Punch’ or ‘Justice League.’ Army of the Dead plays out like something similar to an Oceans Eleven film.
It heralds a bunch of talent ready to take on a mission to break into a safe in the middle of an apocalypse. Time is not on their side. A nuclear bomb is set to take out the epicenter of the zombie horde and everyone (except for the undead) is in it for the money. What’s more, it all feels weird. Especially when the zombie movies you are used to never feature this kind of story.
Army of the Dead starts extremely flashy for a zombie movie. The soundtrack takes on its agenda early. In addition, it sets the tone for the rest of the film. Some parts you will love and some parts will make you furrow your brow. However, this action and horror movie is easily one of the best things I have seen in a while. You can watch this film on the Netflix streaming platform. The cast and characters are run-of-the-mill but they are also likable, memorable, and easy to watch. While I waited for Snyder to botch it all up, I was still invested in knowing Bautista would bring it home.
Army of the Dead Cast
Surprisingly, a new heroine arrived on the scene. In addition, I was stunned to learn my favorite cast member was a blow-in after a scandal with Chris D’Elia. Tig Notaro plays a helicopter mechanic and pilot. She was inserted via a green screen for her role as Marianne. You certainly can’t tell. It all ends up bringing a perfect combination of comedy and grit and I loved everything about her. Alongside Matthias Schweighöfer’s Dieter who blatantly screams every time the undead come near him, there is a lovely balance between the fast and furious pace of the rest of the film.
I loved the introduction of a zombie society. It gave The Army of the Dead depth and nuance that zombie film fans aren’t altogether used to. And then there were the zombie animals. I caught the image of the zombie tiger in the lead-up to watching Army of the Dead. By the time he graces the screen, I am fairly certain my pupils dilated. Later, the alpha zombie rides in on a zombie horse, I was cast back to Game of Thrones glory and it was as if all my Christmases had come at once.
Finally, a Zombie Movie That Uses The Cranberries “Zombie” Song
While Army of the Dead is a must-see film for lovers of the zombie subgenre, there are a few dull moments. Some moments were essentially padding and nothing else. Scenes where I was reminded of teachers at school who used to cross non-essential paragraphs from my reports and told me to ‘get to the point.’ But these are few and far between. If viewed as a positive, there is ample time to break for a drink or snack run and not miss a thing.
Lastly, Zack Snyder and his Army of the Dead is a solid and enjoyable film with plenty to be excited about. Set 2.5 hours of your time aside and know you’ll be happy you did.
