Most Anticipated Movies, 10 Titles To Add To Your Watchlist

Most anticipated Fantasia Film Festival titles list for 2021

Now that Fantasia Film Festival 2021’s full lineup is released, it’s time for Mother of Movies picks. It goes without saying I am also looking forward to sizzling titles like Brain Freeze, The Suicide Squad, and Takashi Miike’s The Great Yokai War: Guardians. If you didn’t already know, this is my favorite time of the year. This list is our predictions for the best 10 films from the 2021 litter from the festival season. What looks hot and needs to be noted on that never-ending movie watch list? These films do.

Sweetie You Won't Believe It
Sweetie, You Won’t Believe It

SWEETIE, YOU WON’T BELIEVE IT

Kazakhstan – Dir. Yernar Nurgaliyev

A horror comedy that relies on proportionate bad luck and happenstance, sounds good to me. I was fortunate enough to find a trailer for Sweetie You Won’t Believe It which shows a trio of men who go fishing instead of staying for the birth of one of their wives. The score sounds fun and the ensuing violence which looks to begin while the boys are floating on the river on inflatable blow-up dolls looks pretty hilarious.

The Festival cited this film somewhere in the middle of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hangover.” What more proof do you need that this title is one of the most anticipated movies?

When I Consume You by director Perry Blackshear
When I Consume You by director Perry Blackshear

WHEN I CONSUME YOU

Based purely on the title alone, I was elated to see this horror and mystery film is from Perry Blackshear. If you haven’t seen his other film They Look Like People, you should probably add that to your watchlist too. The official storyline cites When I Consume You to be about a brother and sister getting stalked by an ominous figure. Revenge ensues.

The When I Consume You trailer and movie review.

The Feast

THE FEAST

Directed by Lee Haven Jones, I saw a few films last year that talked about a storyline that felt like a fairytale. Lee Haven Jones is better known for his titles 35 Days and Doctor Who. Set at a dinner party in a remote location, this film sounds like a winner to me. The story evolves over the course of one evening. The Feast played at 2021’s SXSW film festival and reviews proclaim a tense and eerie folk horror slow burn. I’m in.

Additionally, I found this clip in place of a trailer. The film has been picked up by IFC Midnight. The Feast was reviewed on Mother of Movies.

Coming Home in the Dark 2021
Coming Home in the Dark 2021

COMING HOME IN THE DARK

New Zealand – Dir. James Ashcroft

A film that tells a story while on the road sounds like an interesting ride to me. The trailer for this New Zealand director, James Ashcroft shows a man with a shotgun saying to a family that sits on the roadside, “I’m a magician, I make things disappear” which sets the tone for what looks to be a mighty tense climatic thriller. Coming Home in the Dark is based on a short story by Owen Marshall.

THE SADNESS

The Sadness already has a reputation based on its virtual premiere at the European Film Market where it was scooped up by Raven Banner. Set during a pandemic, the blood-filled Red Band trailer will give you just enough to look at to decide if this is something you need to see.

A Taiwanese gorefest by filmmaker Rob Jabbaz, The Sadness will not be something that everyone will enjoy.

THE DEEP HOUSE 2021 Alexandre Bustillo & Julien Maury

THE DEEP HOUSE – 2021’s Most Anticipated Movies List

Mother of Movies will watch anything from filmmakers Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury. They don’t hit the proverbial nail on the head every time but each film they deliver exudes beautiful horror cinematography. We covered their previous film Kandisha and adored the cult classic Inside so it’s fair to say the setting and themes for this one convey excitement.

Youtubers deep-diving into the depths of an isolated lake that holds a house with a history of being sinister. Yes, please. I generally don’t watch trailers, but for this horror movie list, I can say the teaser looks awesome. What I noticed first, is the dialogue is in English, the scenery is spectacular and it looks exactly like the type of film I need in my life. Fortunately, the trailer doesn’t seem to give too much away, so check it out if you want to get amped.

Prisoners of the Ghostland movie

Prisoners of the Ghostland

“In Samurai Town, two American men, Hero (Nicholas Cage) and Psycho (Nick Cassavettes) walk into a Japanese bank, brandishing guns and yelling “Banzai!”

official news from Prisoners of the Ghostland

Do we need more Nic Cage? Yes. The end. Just kidding, Prisoners of the Ghostland follows a criminal required to end a long-standing curse so that he can save the girl. What’s more, the cast had this girl frothing at the mouth. Starring Nicolas Cage, Sofia Boutella, Nick Cassavetes, Bill Moseley, and plenty more familiar faces, this is at the top of my festival watchlist. No full trailer yet, but I’ll get back to you as soon as I see one.

All The Moons

A vampire story with a difference, All the Moons sounds increasingly interesting the more I learn about it. After 2021’s Bleed With Me and My Heart Can’t Beat Unless You Tell It To, Mother of Movies is astounded there is so much still to offer within this saturated subgenre.

Set in 1876 a woman heals a young girl amidst the bombing of an orphanage and tells her she can no longer go out in the daytime. Written by Jon Sagala and Igor Legarreta, All The Moons is directed by Legarreta. Death, love intolerance, and loneliness are captured without a lot of speaking.

The fact that horror and fantasy film has been picked up by Filmax (who did [REC]) is extremely promising. Early reviews have shown this is definitely a movie you need to see. The trailer looks stunning in addition.

#Blue_Whale

The appeal of movies like Profile, Searching, and Unfriended makes the horror and thriller film “Blue Whale” seem like it might have something going for it. There was even a film titled Stare based on the Japanese hoax Momo in recent years that I thought was cool but flew under the radar. Blue Whale is inspired by Eastern European cybercrimes that seeped into real life to cause real deaths. Directed by Anna Zaytseva “the film”Blue Whale” is one of 2021’s most anticipated movies and promises lots of teens being manipulated online.

Ultrasound

A man’s car breaks down and he’s forced to bunker down with a married couple. The teaser clip below shows the husband talking to the man, Glen at the kitchen table. In the conversation, he suggests that he sleep with his wife. Very much not at all like Indecent Proposal, the clip ends with Glen walking towards the room as the husband loiters in the background with a smile on his face. I’m totally intrigued by this science fiction film directed by Rob Schroeder that promises to deliver “torturous surprises.”

Starring Breeda Wool (MR. MERCEDES ), Chelsea Lopez (ARE WE NOT CATS), Tunde Adebimpe (SHE DIES TOMORROW), Rainey Qualley (OCEAN’S 8 ). And also, Mark Burnham ( LOWLIFE ), and old David Fincher movie regular Bob Stephenson (FIGHT CLUBZODIACSE7EN).
