Blow Up My Life Doesn’t Star Tom Cruise

Blow Up My Life movie

“Blow Up My Life” serves as a thriller movie with a funny bone. The title comes complete with the heart of a story navigating a crisis affecting many people. Jason used to work for a company called Furenza, a drug company responsible for an app he created allowing the opioid-addicted to utilize an app alongside a vaping pen to overcome their dependency. After being fired from his job, Jason started his own company, JT Computer Repair and while still reeling from his unceremonious exit, gets a call from Gary who needs his laptop fixed.

The opioid epidemic holds center court in a story that leaves Jason in a tricky situation. While repairing his obnoxious ex-colleagues work computer, he finds evidence of a glitch in his software. Not just any glitch, but one that causes those looking to ease their suffering to ensure they stay hooked forever.

Jason (Jason Selvig, The Supporters) is definitely the kind of person to back down from a fight. Especially one against a billion-dollar pharmaceutical company. At first, he considers ignoring the situation and going about his own business but decides to talk to his cousin Charlie (Kara Young, The Punisher) who is a computer hacker. Charlie convinces Jason to become a whistle-blower and takes charge of the evidence and together they formulate a plan. But first, Jason needs to talk to Gary about what he found on his laptop.

Big Pharma and IPOs

Man, things really took a nosedive when he met Gary. Turns out, not only did Gary know about the corruption, he was actually all for it. They got into a massive argument late at night and boy, did things spiral out of control in a hurry. Not only is Jason one man up against large-scale corporate dominance but he discovers what it feels like to be a very small fish in a very big bowl.

From here, Blow Up My Life gets just violent enough for you to know it’s serious. Gary and Jason end up coming to blows and suddenly Jason realises he’s just added to his problems.

He and Charlie enlist Jason’s ex-girlfriend Priya who, as a journalist can help them bring the corrupt state of Furenza to light. First, though, she needs more evidence. What comes next is a flurry of fast-paced scenarios that lead Jason and Charlie into increasingly more dangerous situations.

“Blow Up My Life” is a title that exudes independence and enthusiasm. Ryan Dickie and Abigail Horton, the talented writer-director duo, may be newcomers to the world of feature-length films, but their inexperience doesn’t show. While the storyline may not be groundbreaking, the film showcases their exceptional filmmaking skills and their ability to maximize limited resources. With a remarkable cast, endearing characters, and antagonists that you can’t help but root against, “Blow Up My Life” hooked me from start to finish, leaving me eagerly anticipating what would come next.

Dead Pan Comedy

Blow Up My Life is a film that successfully blends its humor with drama. The comedic elements are skillfully executed, providing several laugh-out-loud moments for those who appreciate deadpan gags. One particularly amusing highlight is a self-aware joke about actor Jason Selvigs’ resemblance to Tom Cruise. This revelation adds an extra layer of fun to the film that I really liked.

Blow Up My Life 2023

On the downside, is Blow Up My Life’s jarring final moments. While sometimes I appreciate an ending that allows me to use my imagination, I found the conclusion very abrupt. So abruptly, I tracked back thinking I had missed something. Overall, the film is an excellent example of independent filmmaking and a hidden movie gem if you are looking for one.
