What Still Remains Movie Post-Apocalyptic Faith and Survival Lesson

“What Still Remains marks Josh Mendoza’s debut as a feature film director, following his success with a series of short films. Hooked by the premise, I was immediately excited to watch this title. As a fan of anything apocalyptic, the trailer perfectly sets the stage for a thrilling and tension-filled experience. We are immersed in a world where lone survivors navigate the dangers of a post-pandemic society, armed with guns, barricades, and an ever-present sense of fear.

The film takes place in a remote location, reminiscent of scenes from The Walking Dead, but without the groaning zombies. Instead, we encounter berserkers and references to ‘the changed,’ providing intriguing glimpses into Anna’s backstory. Anna, who is depicted as a self-sufficient survivalist, embodies both strength and isolation. When Peter enters the story, a palpable wariness settles in. His role as a preacher immediately raised red flags for me. Every word and action he takes becomes magnified, especially when he refers to his community as ‘The Sanctuary.’ Foreshadowing visuals and dialogue curls through the first half of the film.

The Storyline for What Still Remains Movie is About Survivors

What began as a promising start gradually loses its momentum in the second half. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly why, but perhaps it felt a bit too familiar for someone like me, who’s a fan of apocalyptic and virus movies. The twists and turns didn’t surprise me as much as I had hoped, and the overall story seemed formulaic, lacking originality. Nevertheless, it’s still a decent film, thanks to the quality performances and solid casting choices. Interestingly, you’ll even spot an actor from The Walking Dead, Jeff Kober, who played Joe in Season 4 and adds depth to the story.

What Still Remains is available for VOD streaming since August 14th, 2018. It deserves a spot on your list of top movies on Prime and Tubi TV. Especially if you enjoy post-apocalyptic thrillers. The film depicts a world ravaged by an epidemic, where survival is rare and the few remaining humans are now replaced by feral monsters known as “the changed.” Follow Anna’s journey as she seeks a better life, questioning whether the survivors left are any better than the monsters themselves. If you’re in the mood for a flick on a lazy Friday night, give What Still Remains a try.
