The Ice Road movie tries to be all things to all people. Relatable to the stories of Ice Road Truckers, the disaster and thriller movie also taps its toes on various areas of political agenda. With moments of high tension as well as tedium, the action movie begins with Mike and Gurty being bounced from job to job. Both a hindrance and an asset with pipe dreams a mile high, their relationship wavers from endearing to frustrating at almost every turn.

By this time, the narrative includes miners trapped under the ground. It shows us there are some suspect people in power, and brings out Amber Midthunder (Legion) doing burnouts in one of the big rigs. On the upside, the film does play around with some truly nail-biting scenes. We are treated to this motley crew of drivers on a mission to save the trapped miners by hauling life-saving machinery to the site.

The Ice Road Cast

The weather-centric title is the kind of pragmatic movie you endure with a cast like the one included here. Liam Neeson stars as Mike but seems as tired of movies as Bruce Willis. Laurence Fishburne suddenly appears in a high-angled shot underneath a large rig.

The miners are running out of air and the truckers have little time to reach their destination. They embark across the icy roads and talk about the dangers and peril of the ice road trucker life. Each of them acknowledging the task may see them perish while traversing frozen lakes carrying 65,000 pounds of steel and tires.

Opioids and Racial Slurs

Writer-director Jonathan Hensleigh adds some brief commentary about the opioid epidemic, indigenous rights, and how large corporations are always trying to save a buck. Somehow none of these issues take pride of place in The Ice Road movie and instead flap around in the background. As the air pocket window for the miners begins to run out we have to endure Neeson flailing about in the snow with a conspirator, dodgy CGI scenes, and the growing concern that somehow The Ice Road on Netflix is not going to deliver.

What should have been an easy disaster and thriller movie to spring on those that love this type of film, instead becomes an unbelievable assembly of truck tricks that simply defy any logic in their maneuvers. Watching two gigantic rigs being hefted upright in what seemed like minutes and a pet rat biting a bad guy on cue is impressive. But the coincidental prop scenarios just degraded the entertainment levels more and more until finally, it was over.

How Much Do Ice Road Truckers Make?

Is The Ice Road movie based on real events? No. But Ice Road Truckers are pretty real. The job of these truckers is perilous at best. But considering the danger, their earnings are attractive. The average earnings for Ice Road Truckers are about $2000 per trip of continuous driving for around 25 hours. Those who do it for whole seasons can earn quite a heft return for their part.
